In this study, the seroprevalence of Toxoplasma gondii in stray and domestic cats in two municipalities of the city of San Pedro de Macorís was investigated. A total of 177 cats were sampled (104 stray cats and 73 domestic cats). Sera from each cat were tested for antibodies to T. gondii by the modified agglutination test (MAT). A total of 10.26% of the cats (18 of 177) were found to be Toxoplasma IgG-positive, whereas none of the animals were MAT-positive for Toxoplasma IgM. All positive cats were adults of both sexes, and were captured in the two municipalities, suggesting that the cat population is exposed to T. gondii.Summary: An elevated serum level of cortisol is associated with increased risk of developing gastric cancer.
